You don't need to rush straight into the ocean to start exploring GTA V's underwater world. First, get your story progress and equipment sorted. The Sonar Collections Dock becomes available after The Merryweather Heist, giving you a useful base for trips off the northwestern coast. If you're browsing GTA 5 Accounts while planning your next playthrough, keep that campaign requirement in mind. Account shopping and story progression are separate things. For this route, your immediate goal is simple: finish the mission, then head toward Paleto Cove with enough cash to purchase the dock.

Know what you're paying for

The Sonar Collections Dock costs $250,000 in story mode, so check your character's funds before making the drive. Look for the property purchase marker beside the waterfront at Paleto Cove. Buying the dock gives you access to its submersible and opens up nuclear waste collection activities. That makes it worth considering if you enjoy searching the seabed, rather than just taking a quick swim. Don't think of the purchase as a normal clothing transaction, though. The useful part is access to the dock's equipment and underwater activities, not a wardrobe full of diving outfits.

Get your equipment working before heading out

Scuba equipment works differently from the everyday clothes your character wears around town. In story mode, using a suitable vessel, such as the submersible or a Dinghy, is the practical way to obtain breathing equipment when you enter the water. Check your character after leaving the vehicle. You should see the breathing apparatus rather than assume that buying the property has automatically changed your outfit. Before swimming away, run through a few basic checks. A minute spent close to the dock is better than discovering a problem far offshore.

Look for the air tank and mask.
Test your breathing equipment near the surface.
Keep your return route in sight.

Take the first dive slowly

Slip beneath the surface somewhere with room to swim, then watch your air indicator. Working scuba equipment lets you remain underwater without the usual breath limit. There's no need to race toward the deepest spot immediately. Follow the seabed, get comfortable with the controls, and use landmarks to keep your bearings. Wrecks and underwater collectibles are easier to investigate when you're not constantly heading up for air. Depth still deserves respect, and breathing equipment doesn't protect you from every danger.

Keep shopping separate from the dive
