Diablo 4 Season 16's War Plans Tactics system is most valuable when you have a clear farming need, not when you are trying to improve every option at once. Early characters can let the default choices cover several activities, while established characters may gain more from directing rewards toward missing materials or equipment. If your next upgrade depends on a particular item slot, browsing Diablo IV Items can help clarify that target, but Tactics still decides how efficiently your playtime produces useful choices.
Spend points where your next sessions will go
Tactics points come from completing War Plans, then go into activity nodes or reward nodes. Activity nodes can hold three points each, increasing the chance that the selected activity appears, but they do not turn that activity into a guaranteed offer. This makes the system a steering tool rather than a replacement for planning your route.
Reward nodes cover Armor, Weapons, Jewelry, Obducite, Salvage, Gems, Gold, Activity Keys, Horadric Cube Materials and Talisman Items. A broad reward spread is sensible while your character needs several categories, whereas focused spending has more value when one material or equipment type is blocking progress. Points remain useful as your needs change, provided you are willing to adjust the tree.
Activity focus and reward focus serve different stages
The main choice is whether to make preferred activities appear more often or improve access to preferred rewards across available activities. Helltides and Nightmare Dungeons also unlock an extra preference after receiving at least one point, adding Greater Helltides or Escalation Dungeons to the related choice. That extra layer is useful only if you regularly want the more specialized version.
| Plan | Best use | Main cost | Growth value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Activity Focus | Targeted farming | Less reward coverage | Strong with a fixed route |
| Reward Focus | General upgrades | Less activity control | Flexible across stages |
| Balanced Setup | Mixed needs | Slower specialization | Easy to adapt |
Adjust after the bottleneck changes
Completed War Plans award Marks of Wisdom, which replace the previous gold cost for changing nodes in the Tactics tree and individual Activity trees. On the PTR, the holding limit is 20 Marks, and the test boost provides 20 Marks of Wisdom plus three Marks of El'druin. That makes experimentation easier during testing, but it should not be treated as evidence of the live economy.
Use your points in stages instead of filling every node automatically. A practical order is.
Choose one activity node that matches the content you can run consistently.
Add a reward node tied to the material or equipment category blocking your next improvement.
Unlock the Helltide or Nightmare Dungeon preference only when its specialized option fits your route.
Rework the tree when your limiting resource changes rather than saving points for an undefined future need.
Filling all ten reward nodes would take 30 points, so complete coverage is a long-term project rather than an efficient opening move for most characters. If your available offers already support your current route, save the adjustment resource and keep investing only when a specific shortage appears.
Use the schedule before changing the plan
Helltides now begin at the hour in base game zones and at half past in expansion zones, creating a new event every 30 minutes while alternating between those zone groups. At least one base game zone always has an active Helltide, and Aberrant Cinders carry over between events instead of resetting. These changes apply even when Helltides are not included in a War Plan, so timing can be useful without spending Tactics points on it.
The PTR also includes a combined Lair Boss encounter featuring the Corrupted Reaper and Fractured Reaper, alongside updates to Infernal Hordes and the Pit. Treat these systems as reasons to test different allocations, not as proof that one tree will remain ideal after the test period. PC players can use the available test boosts for Lair Keys, Tributes, Infernal Compasses and Nightmare Escalation Sigils while comparing routes.
Start with the activity or reward that solves your present bottleneck, then watch whether your sessions actually produce better choices. When the limiting resource changes, spend Marks of Wisdom to reshape the tree instead of forcing an outdated plan, and look for diablo 4 gear only after deciding which slot or upgrade your farming route is meant to support.
