Key Factors Why You Should Move QuickBooks Desktop File to QuickBooks Online

Take the following reasons into consideration if you are going to move your QBDT Data to QBO.

  • To get the updated features and tax rates.
  • This also processes the backup process automatically.
  • QBO simplifies the data entry tasks and reduces human errors.

Migration Using QuickBooks Desktop

Before you go into the migration process, take care of the following things.

Back up your company file

  • Update QuickBooks Desktop
  • Check your Total Targets
  • Remove Ministère du Revenu (companies outside of Quebec only)
  • Turn off payroll in the QuickBooks Desktop file
  • Save your Sales Tax Liability report
  • Export your reports and lists
  • Create a QuickBooks Online account

After you have implemented the solutions above and are assured of them. Let's proceed with the migration.

  • Sign in to QBDT as an admin user.
  • Export your QBDT company files. See how:
    • For QBDT Pro and Premier: Go to Company> tap on Export Your Company File to QuickBooks Online.
    • For QBDT Enterprise: To open the Product Information window, press Ctrl+1. Later, press Ctrl+B+Q. After this, click OK.
  • Tap on the Get Started option.
  • When you see the "Let's bring your data to QuickBooks Online" message on your screen, choose how you want the migration to be done:
    • Bring all of your company data.
    • Bring only lists and balances.
  • You have two options if you have inventory:
    • Option 1: Yes, track inventory using FIFO.
      • Tap option 1 and then pick a starting date.
    • Option 2: No, don't move inventory. You can move your inventory manually.
      • Tap option 2, where any inventory you have will be listed as non-inventory items.
  • You will be asked to choose a home currency if you use multi-currency.
  • Later, you will be asked whether you have a QBO account:
    • Tap Yes, sign me in if you have one, and then choose Continue.
    • Tap No, I need to create one if you haven't signed up to QBO.
  • Use the user ID and password to sign in to the QBO account.
  • There, you will see your QBO company names and subscriptions listed.
  • Choose the company where it will be migrated.
  • Now, tap Continue and then click on the Export option.
  • After doing this, you will be able to see a progress bar showing you the migration.

Note: If your QBO account already contains some data, you will be asked to replace the existing data. Remember, you won't be able to get your previous data back if you choose to replace it. So be careful before replacing it.

  • Tap Agree, click Replace.
  • Choose Yes, go ahead and replace the data, then pick the Replace option.
