Carpets are a great decoration choice for many of us as they add warmth, style and comfort to a home. Based on fabric and style, there are different ways to clean and maintain your rug. Some are more delicate than others and require more gentle cleaning methods, while others can be cleaned with pretty much any detergent. To protect your investment, follow our tips and hints on how to properly clean your precious carpet.

Vacuuming the carpeting

Regular vacuuming of your rug is required to keep it dust and dirt free. At least once a month, you should also flip your carpet upside down and vacuum its back. By doing this, you will push dust toward the top of the carpet.

Make sure not to vacuum the fringes of your rug as they can easily get sucked into the vacuum head. To prevent damage, clean them by hand.

Wiping spills and stains

Carpets receive a lot of attention at home, so when the inevitable happens and you spill a glass of red wine on it, act promptly. The rule with carpet stains is that the faster you act, the better the final results will be.

Blot the spillage, using a clean cloth or towel. Once you have absorbed all moisture, rub the carpet in straight lines using an appropriate carpet cleaning solution. Make sure to never rub in circular motions as this can cause permanent damage to your rug. If you prefer to use a home-made carpet cleaning solution, consider white vinegar. Mix 3 tablespoons vinegar in 1/3 bucket warm water. Apply the mixture using a clean cloth. You'll be interested to know that white vinegar is also great for removing bad odours (from pets for instance).

General carpet cleaning tips
  • Never apply detergent directly onto the carpet. Use a towel or a cloth to put the spotter on and then blot the stain.
  • Dry as fast as possible your carpet, once you have removed the stain. To speed the process, use your hairdryer or a fan.
  • Rotate your carpet twice a year. By turning it by 180 degrees, you will wear it more evenly.
  • Always roll your carpet, when you need to transport it. Never fold as this can cause wrinkles and permanent damage to its fabric.
